The Hogwarts Express, the Harry Potter Train

by Karolina on July 7, 2010

Part of many Harry Potter movies is the Harry Potter train which brings the student witches and wizards from the human world to their school, Hogwarts. The train’s name, as many would already know, is Hogwarts Express. It runs through London to Station 9 in King’s Cross Station to Hogsmeade Station and back. It brings Hogwarts students to and from the Hogwarts castle every start and end of the school term. It makes a total run of six times a year and more if needed. The failure of a student witch or wizard to come on time may leave them without a ride to go to Hogwarts. This is due to the fact that Hogwarts Express, without fail, leaves Platform 9 ¾ every September 1 at exactly 11:00 am in the morning to be able to arrive at Hogwarts early in the evening. During holidays. i.e, Easter and Christmas, Hogwarts students will be brought by the train back to King’s Cross Station and back to London at the term’s end in June.

Look what customers say:

We got this train to put around the Christmas tree, since it was on sale at toys r us we got it figuring my daughter could enjoy it after the holidays also.  It moves pretty fast and goes forward and backward. It looks really sturdy and I thought it was a great buy. We are happy we bought it because my daughter enjoys using the controller for it and watching it light up and go around the track. I would recommend this train to anyone.

The Harry Potter train used during the filming of the movie comes with some interesting facts you may want to know about. Firstly, the actual train used for the filming is the Great Western Railway – Hall Class Train. It has the body number 5972 Olton Hall. Some would jokingly call is a hall that thinks it is a castle and was even later called “Hogwarts Castle”, which is only used for Castle Class trains and locomotives.

Still another interesting trivia about the Harry Potter train is that it was vandalized during the filming and photography sessions of the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which forced them to shut down the shooting for a few days. The expenses reached about 3 thousand pounds just to repair what was vandalized. In the filming of the fifth book, the Order of the Phoenix, the train was again vandalized, this time much worse than the last one where damages reached 50,000 pounds. To be noted is that Hogwarts Express was only seen to have been ridden by four adults after 6 versions of the movie has been shown. Aside from the students, the four other adults who have even ridden the train was the conductor, the food trolley lady, Lupin and Slughorn.
